Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)
What is the IDI?
The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) helps individuals and teams assess and reflect on cultural/multicultural competence. An understanding of one’s cultural perspective and behaviors to similarities and differences is a key factor in understanding the framework from where we begin. Intercultural/multicultural competence is imperative today as our schools and communities become increasingly multicultural, multilingual, and multiracial. “Intercultural competence is the link between Diversity and Inclusion. It is about making a diverse community an inclusive one.” (IDI Resource Guide, 2016)
What's the Purpose of the IDI?
The IDI has been used successfully in building intercultural competence for individuals, teams, and organizations, including colleges / universities and primary / secondary schools. It is a valuable assessment tool for schools and organizations seeking to develop multicultural competence in their faculty and staff and for individuals who are seeking to build their own intercultural/multicultural competence. Some key goals include:
Understand the developmental stages of intercultural/multicultural sensitivity through which people move towards greater intercultural/multicultural effectiveness
Increase self-awareness for each individual and identify issues that may be impeding personal growth
Increase organization-level understanding of intercultural/multicultural issues
Determine multicultural training and educational needs
Evaluate the effectiveness of training, counseling, and educational endeavors
Improve the intercultural skills of respondents through continued coaching
What Ways Can the IDI Be Used?
Organizational Policy / Strategic Planning
Leadership Development / Coaching
Training / Classroom Teaching / Classroom Learning / Team Development
Program Analysis / Evaluation
How Does the IDI Assessment Work?
Participants complete a confidential online inventory. The assessment is a theory-based, valid, and reliable psychometric instrument. It is a 50 item questionnaire available in 12 languages.
How are Results Received?
Results need to be delivered by a Qualified Administrator (QA). An IDI Qualified Administrator (QA) is an individual who has been trained and is qualified to facilitate group and individual IDI debriefs and coaching (sessions that breakdown and explain the IDI and results) as well as follow-up training associated with the IDI.
Individual Profiles
An individual assessment includes an Individual Profile Report and an Individual Development Plan. The profile provides a deeper understanding of where you are developmentally in your intercultural/multicultural competence. The plan provides a framework to help you determine and achieve your own intercultural/multicultural goals. * You will not receive your Individual Profile Report or Individual Development Plan unless you are debriefed by a Qualified Administrator.
Group Profiles
Organizations can use the IDI for staff training and/or development. A Group Profile Report shows how your organization functions when dealing with intercultural/multicultural differences and commonalities. All members of the group will need to take the individual assessment in order to receive a group profile.
Personalized Coaching
Personalized coaching can be a great help in helping you continue you multicultural/intercultural learning. This can take place on a regular and consistent basis or on an as needed basis.
Dr. Paone is an IDI Qualified Administrator (QA) trained to administer the IDI to organizations, schools, and individuals. She is qualified to interpret and provide feedback on both individual and group profiles. This includes customized planning for the further development of intercultural/multicultural competence.
